Haad Yao

Long Beach — the northwest's most swimmable shore

עברית

Haad Yao — Long Beach — is one of the few places on Koh Phangan's west coast where you can actually swim comfortably at most tides. The bay curves gently for about 600 metres, with soft sand that stays clear of the mangrove-coral edges found further south. At the northern end, a small headland creates a natural breakwater; at the southern end, the bay opens toward Koh Samui, whose mountain silhouette rises across the water on clear days.

The village itself has grown slowly and organically. There is a main street with a reliable mix of Thai restaurants, a few dive schools, motorbike rental shops and the kind of guesthouse-run cafes where prices have not changed dramatically in a decade. This is not a status destination — it does not try to be — but the quality of daily life is high. The evening market that sets up near the beach road is one of the island's more pleasant outdoor dining experiences.

Accommodation here spans a genuine range. At one end, budget bungalow operations with fan rooms and cold showers that serve the diving-and-snorkeling crowd. At the other, serious pool villas on the hillside with views that stretch across the water to Koh Samui and, on exceptional days, to the Ang Thong archipelago beyond. Palm Stone Villa is the best-known independent property here — a four-bedroom hillside house with exceptional views managed directly by the owners.

Bay Villas Koh Phangan represents the resort end of the market: professionally managed villa-style units with hotel services, structured check-in and a level of operational predictability that some travelers specifically want. The combination of budget and luxury options in the same small bay is unusual and genuinely useful.

Haad Yao works well for families because the beach is swimmable, there are dive operators who run junior programs, the village is walkable and the social atmosphere is low-pressure compared to the wellness-intense zones further north. The 40-minute scooter ride to Thong Sala is the one real friction point — plan supply runs accordingly.
