Chaloklum

Fisherman's bay — the island's most authentic north shore

עברית

Chaloklum is the largest fishing village on Koh Phangan's north shore and, in the view of many long-term residents, the most genuinely Thai place left on an island that has changed enormously over twenty-five years. The bay is wide and calm, protected by headlands on both sides, and the wooden fishing boats that have been docking here for generations are still here, alongside the growing number of dive boats and longtails serving the growing tourist trade.

The village has its own rhythm. The morning fish market starts before six, when the night boats return with their catch. By mid-morning, the main street wakes up — coffee shops, a small bakery, motorcycle rental operations, a pharmacy, and the kind of local restaurants where plastic stools face the street and the menu has no English translation because until recently nobody thought to provide one. The quality of fresh seafood here is exceptional and the price is low.

ADIKA Beach Villas represents the more developed accommodation end of the market — a modern villa complex on the eastern headland with access to the bay and professional management. The contrast with the village itself is sharp, which is partly the point: guests can choose how much they engage with the fishing village life below.

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is a 30-minute longtail ride east and is one of the island's genuinely spectacular hidden bays — accessible only by boat or a long hike. Chaloklum is the best base for reaching it. Similarly, the dive sites around Sail Rock (between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao) are reached from Chaloklum operators with shorter boat rides than from anywhere further south on the island.

The north-coast road is narrower and more varied than the west-coast road — beautiful to ride in the dry season, occasionally challenging in the wet. Budget at least 45 minutes to reach Thong Sala, more after rain.

Best for

  • Divers targeting Sail Rock
  • Authenticity seekers
  • Families who want village life
  • Bottle Beach daytrippers

Getting around

North-coast road. 45+ min to Thong Sala. Scenic but narrow. Longtail boats from bay for Bottle Beach and east-coast stops.
